Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Bangor, Wisconsin. When requiring a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, turn to Accredited Drug Testing, who excels in hair testing, with facilities throughout the nation available for hair evaluations. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can typically be used. Hair testing can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become more prevalent in drug screening. Many businesses, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now opt for hair drug tests over urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and those on probation. Its main advantage is the prolonged detection time of up to 90 days, collected in a monitored process and very difficult to falsify. However, for identifying recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests are still the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a lengthy record of alcohol and various drugs by anchoring biomarkers within its growing fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to around a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, generally resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximating the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab analysis of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be courtroom admissible. Samples that test positive in Screening are required to undergo secondary confirmation.

If a specimen turns out positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lesser concentration levels than in other techniques (for instance, urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to forge: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Reveals historical usage: It depicts a timeline of drug use, reflecting patterns over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair in roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result disparities: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being labeled as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Bangor, WI, hair follicle testing outperforms traditional urine tests, offering superior detection capabilities. Hair tests provide a more comprehensive analysis, identifying drug use overlooked by urine tests. This methodology enhances reliability, giving employers confidence in their screening processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
