Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug evaluations in Batavia, Wisconsin. If your requisites include a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we excel in hair diagnostics, with testing facilities available across cities nationwide to conduct hair tests. For most situations, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head's crown or body hair may suffice. These tests analyze various substances including drugs and alcohol/ETG or can cater to specific hair analysis needs.

In the past few years, drug testing procedures more prominently feature hair follicle drug assessments. This technique is increasingly demanded by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts over the conventional urine test. Organizations with strict no-drug-use policies, judicial bodies, and probation supervisors are gravitating towards hair follicle assessments. One major advantage of hair tests is their capacity for extended detection—often up to 90 days—applying an overseen collection method which is nearly impossible to manipulate. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use within the past five days, urine remains the most precise testing method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lasting record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows. When secured near the scalp, hair offers roughly a three-month span for detecting alcohol and drug use. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to send for testing.

A cut of 1.5 inches from around 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil's size) nearest the scalp yields approximately 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for initial analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or testing beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the hair. If scalp hair isn't available, an equal mass of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it pertains only to hair from the scalp. Body hair encompasses other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The main phases in the lab processing of a drug test encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with integrating a sample into a laboratory's process. This phase ensures the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any extra data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drug use. Although Screening is cost-effective for ruling out use in many samples, a positive needs to be verified for legal acceptability. Any presumptive positive samples from Screening require further confirmation.

For samples flagged as positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the existing sample for Extraction. This phase isolates drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair testing exceptionally challenging.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples initially showing positive are cleansed as needed. The full lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is subject to review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria as well as ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests are capable of indicating drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter periods.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug tests are notably hard to falsify, ensuring more dependable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: They illustrate a drug usage pattern over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the procedure evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Batavia, WI, hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine tests in numerous ways. Unlike urine tests, which detect recent drug use, hair tests unveil a longer usage timeline, revealing patterns over months. This quality makes hair testing far more accurate and reliable, offering insight that urine tests simply cannot match.

Empowered by advanced technology, hair follicle tests effectively identify substance use with superior precision. While urine tests may catch a fleeting glimpse of recent behaviors, hair testing paints a detailed picture, crucial for informed decision-making.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window offered by hair follicle tests in Batavia, WI, is a game changer for employers. Unlike other methods, hair testing can trace drug use up to 90 days, providing a comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance history.

This extended detection is particularly beneficial for employers aiming to evaluate an applicant's or current employee's ongoing patterns rather than their recent behavior, delivering a broader view and aiding better judgment in hiring or current employment decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Batavia, WI, significantly minimize tampering risks, ensuring that results are both reliable and unquestionable. Unlike urine tests, hair samples are highly resistant to external manipulation, maintaining their integrity.

The robustness of the testing method means that results are trustworthy, providing peace of mind to both employers and institutions. This substantial reduction in tamperability stands as a major advantage over more vulnerable test types.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
