In Bayfield, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, our specialty lies in hair testing at numerous centers across the nation. Generally, a 1.5 to 2-inch hair strand from the crown or other body areas can be used. Our hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide additional customized testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent for drug screening in recent times. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over standard urine testing. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies for drug use, courts, and probationers rely on hair tests. The major advantage is the extended detection period for up to 90 days with observed collection, making cheating nearly impossible. Meanwhile, urine tests remain ideal for identifying drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a formidable method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended overview of alcohol and drug intake by entrapping biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the ideal amount for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a specimen into a laboratory's system. This entails confirming that the specimen was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for substance abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use on most specimens, a positive screening necessitates confirmation to be valid in court. Any specimens that are tentatively positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a specimen is tentatively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to deceive: It's very challenging to deceive a hair drug test, making the outcomes more precise.
  • Offers historical insight: It can provide a pattern of substance use over a duration, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect current use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for substances to be visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Bayfield, WI offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. Firstly, it provides a much broader detection window. While urine tests detect recent usage up to a few days, hair can reveal patterns over months. Secondly, hair tests eliminate the risk of tampering and substitution, thus maintaining true sample integrity.

Employers favor hair follicle testing for these reasons, granting them a reliable method to enforce drug-free policies. Moreover, hair tests deliver consistent results unaffected by short-term abstinence or dilution, enhancing the accuracy crucial for making well-informed decisions.

Extended Detection Window

In Bayfield, WI, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing provides a substantial advantage over shorter-term screening methods. Capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days later, this extensive timeframe offers employers a detailed perspective on an individual's substance use patterns.

This thorough analysis is particularly beneficial for organizations wanting a clearer assessment of potential or current employees' past behaviors, ensuring that informed hiring decisions can be made confidently.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Bayfield, WI, hair follicle testing is renowned for its tamper-resistant nature. Because the samples are collected under direct observation and the inherent difficulty in altering hair composition, this method virtually eliminates the possibility of result manipulation.

For employers, these qualities translate into greater confidence and security. They can trust the authenticity and validity of test outcomes, helping to uphold strict drug-free policies with little room for doubt or dispute.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
