Located in Bellevue, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle substance testing. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in this method. With testing facilities dispersed across the nation, our centers are equipped to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed, usually taken from the head or body. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to specific requirements.

In the past few years, the approach towards drug testing has increasingly involved hair follicle testing. This techniquehas garnered preference among employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists over traditional urine analysis. Hair-based assessments cater to zero-tolerance workplaces, probation settings, and legal requirements. The chief advantage is a broader detection timeline, often extending to 90 days. This supervised method is also notorious for its resistance to tampering. Nonetheless, for substances used within a recent 5-day window, urine tests remain the benchmark for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates long-term evidence of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strands. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can provide roughly up to a 3-month detection timeframe for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to alter, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) from the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When referencing head hair, this specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This step entails confirming that the sample was securely sealed and delivered, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry that isn’t included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial, rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a low-cost method to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

When a sample tests tentatively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample to undergo Extraction. This phase involves extracting substances from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to execute.

Any positive screening outcomes are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation follows the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 standards for accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks historical usage: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variable outcomes: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
