Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Birchwood, Wisconsin. Should you require testing for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair analysis, with centers available nationwide, equipped for such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are required. These tests can examine for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

In recent years, conducting drug tests has increasingly incorporated hair follicle examinations. Numerous employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle testing is chosen by organizations with zero-drug tolerance policies, courts, and probationary monitoring. The primary advantage lies in its longer drug detection period, generally up to ninety days, collected under observation, making it difficult to cheat. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests are still the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair provides an extended timeline of alcohol and drug consumption by encapsulating biomarkers in the hair strand as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, less susceptible to contamination, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary, and/or tests that exceed 10 panels, it is advisable to have 150mg of the sample. We advise measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is missing, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. Scalp hair refers specifically to head hair only, while body hair includes all other kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core phases in the lab processing of a drug test result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This encompasses ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not already furnished by a digital chain of custody system.

Screening refers to an initial rapid assessment for drug use. While Screening is a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a screen that's positive must be verified to be court admissible. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening step, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening among the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that register presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair status and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can discern drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is notably difficult to falsify a hair drug test, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Offers past data: It can display a record of drug usage over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
