Located in Black Creek, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to provider for comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether it's a hair drug or alcohol examination, our centers specialize in hair testing, available nationwide. Ensure you have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for most tests. Options include analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and bespoke hair testing solutions.

In recent years, the hair follicle drug test has gained traction within drug testing methodologies. It's increasingly favored by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Those workplaces enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probation programs are prime candidates for hair testing. Its key advantage? A lengthy 90-day detection window, near impossible to manipulate, although for drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain optimal.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture and preserve markers of alcohol and narcotics within the fibers of a maturing hair strand, serving as a long-term record. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 90-day frame for detecting alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient for shipping.

Collecting a 1.5-inch sample of around 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp can retrieve 100mg of hair, perfect for assessment and verification. For EtG and additional tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. It’s suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four critical stages in the processing of hair drug test results in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially entering a sample into a laboratory system, making sure it was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data input not supplied via an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening provides a preliminary examination for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient way to exclude drug consumption in most cases, a positive result from Screening must be verified for legal proceedings. Samples that test presumptive positive in Screening need further verification.

If a specimen tests presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this phase, substances are extracted from the hair at considerably lower concentrations than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis one of the most challenging techniques to perform.

For any positive screening result, Confirmation is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation when required. The comprehensive laboratory process spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Difficulty to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical usage: It provides insight into drug consumption over time, not restricted to recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than other drug testing forms.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the presence of drug metabolites.

Note: Despite often termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
