In Blanchard, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether it's for drug or alcohol related tests, our expertise in hair analysis is unparalleled. Our nationwide network of testing centers provides easy access to hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed, sourced from the scalp or body, for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom tests.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a favored method for screening. An increasing number of employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts prefer hair testing over urine analysis. It supports zero-tolerance policies and ensures the integrity of probation conditions. The standout advantage is its extended detection period, encompassing up to 90 days, and its accuracy is undiminished by attempts of deception. Still, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. If collected near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect, harder to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides approximately 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen quantity of 150mg is recommended. It's advisable to weigh the hair specimen with a jeweler's scale. If there is no scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. When mentioning head hair, it pertains only to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for drug test results comprises four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This phase involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any unfinished data entry process that wasn't accommodated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient means of dismissing drug use for the majority of samples, a screen that returns positive demands confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples that show presumptive positives in Screening require an additional confirmation step.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a highly challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is undertaken using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positives are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Tough to falsify: Hair drug tests are highly resistant to tampering, ensuring greater accuracy of results.
  • Historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over a prolonged period, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot signal recent use: Drugs don't appear in hair until about 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variance: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly misnamed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
