In Blue River, Wisconsin, comprehensive hair follicle drug testing is offered by Accredited Drug Testing. When you need hair drug or alcohol testing, turn to our expertise in this field. We have testing centers nationwide, including every city, to accommodate hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the head or body. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and include custom options.

Over the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug detection. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly require this type of testing instead of the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation. The main advantage is a longer drug detection period, up to 90 days, and its nearly foolproof process. Yet, urine tests remain the preferred choice for recent drug use, within five days, due to their precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying substance use, including both drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a comprehensive history by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When the sample is taken near the scalp, it provides roughly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to gather 150mg of the hair specimen. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types, such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

There are four essential steps in the laboratory processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary inclusion of a sample into a laboratory's framework. This includes ensuring the sample was handled with proper sealing and shipping, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for the presence of drugs. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to potentially eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive findings must undergo confirmation to hold legal credibility. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require a secondary verification.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during the Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original collection for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening presents greater execution challenges.

To confirm any positive result from the screening, methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed. Samples initially registering positive undergo a pre-confirmation wash as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is thoroughly examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal substance use for a period of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter window.
  • Challenging to falsify: It's exceedingly hard to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides historical insights: It offers data on substance use trends over time rather than indicating solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to show up in hair after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternate testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences in hair color and individual hair growth patterns can influence the presence of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the testing targets the hair strand and not the follicle itself beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Choosing hair follicle testing over urine tests in Blue River, WI, offers clear advantages. Hair testing provides superior detection accuracy and reliability, which is crucial for employers who enforce strict drug-free policies.

The detection window of hair tests is significantly broader, making it easier to identify long-term substance use. This reliability ensures that hair follicle testing is a preferred method for comprehensive screenings and helps avoid potential false negatives.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Blue River, WI, reveals substance use over an extended detection window, offering insights as far back as 90 days. This extensive period provides a detailed history of drug use, which is critical for employers.

Such a broad window facilitates transparent and informed decisions about an individual's eligibility and reliability based on their substance history. Employers benefit from a thorough understanding of potential risks associated with long-term drug use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests in Blue River, WI, ensures the integrity of the testing process. Unlike other methods, these tests are difficult to falsify, providing results that are both reliable and trustworthy.

Employers and individuals alike can rely on these tests to present an accurate account of substance use, effectively eliminating concerns over sample adulteration or other manipulations, which enhances the credibility of the results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
