Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Boaz, Wisconsin. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing is adept in hair evaluations, with centers across all cities Nationwide able to conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other testing options.

Recently, the preference for drug testing has leaned more towards hair follicle assessments. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair rather than traditional urine tests. These tests cater to employers with stringent drug policies, legal bodies, and probationers. The advantage lies in their extended drug detection period—up to 90 days—with observed collections minimizing deception. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can archive a prolonged history of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When procured near the scalp, hair offers a detection span of roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to ship.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen's weight on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four principal phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process verifies proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a screen that tests positive must be validated for court admissibility. Any samples suspected positive during Screening need secondary confirmation.

When a sample tests possibly positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing presents the most complexity of methodologies.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is subject to review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Tampering with a hair drug test is highly challenging, yielding more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It delivers a timeline of drug use, covering a period, instead of merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth patterns can influence the drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
