Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance testing services in Bohners Lake, Wisconsin. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we have numerous centers in every city across the nation ready to conduct these tests. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or another area, sufficient for screening drugs, alcohol/ETG, or for personalized testing needs.

In the past few years, the emphasis on drug testing has shifted towards using hair follicle tests more often. Employers, judiciary, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug screenings over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationers favor hair testing. Its chief advantage lies in its extended drug detection window, typically reaching up to 90 days. The collection is monitored to ensure authenticity and makes tampering nearly unattainable. Yet, for identifying drug use in the prior 5 days, urine testing remains unmatched.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term exposure markers within the fibers of its growing strands. When cut close to the scalp, it can offer a detection span of around three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for both preliminary and confirmatory tests. For EtG, supplementary panels, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be provided, an equivalent volume of body hair is acceptable. Reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Synopsis

The processing of a drug testing outcome in a lab involves four principal phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary intake of a sample into the laboratory workflow. This step involves ensuring the sample’s seal and correct shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplementary data recording absent from an electronic custody system.

Screening includes a preliminary evaluation for substance abuse. While Screening is financially efficient for disproving drug use in most samples, positive results mandate Confirmation to be legally valid. Any presumptive positives require an additional confirmation test.

If the sample appears positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting hair testing as one of the most intricate methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive findings is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives undergo a pre-confirmation wash as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, offering a longer detection period than urine tests.
  • Impartiality in results: Altering the outcome of a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological data provision: It offers insight into drug usage trends over an extended timeline, not merely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapability to detect recent use: Drugs only become identifiable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations tend to incur higher costs relative to alternative testing approaches.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables like hair color and individual growth rates potentially influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strands and not the underlying follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
