Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Boulder Junction, Wisconsin. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our company excels in this field with testing facilities in cities nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body is necessary. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and provide custom testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. They cater to employers with strict drug-free policies, legal bodies, and persons on probation. The key advantage of hair tests is a considerably longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, with an observed collection ensuring minimal chances of cheating. Nevertheless, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering an extended history of substance use. When taken close to the scalp, hair samples can reflect up to a three-month window for detecting drugs and alcohol. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and facilitates easy transportation.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil), yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, tests with additional panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's best to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. In cases where scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of drug test results includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial processing within the lab system. This ensures the sample remains sealed and properly shipped, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is designated, and any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody is performed.

Screening acts as a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While this step is a cost-effective mechanism to rule out drug use in most cases, positive screenings require confirmation for court admissibility. Any sample preliminarily identified as positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation process.

For samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, the concentration of drugs is retrieved from the hair at much lower levels than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as the most challenging method to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS perform Confirmation of any positive screens. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: The nature of hair drug testing makes it hard to tamper with, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Insights into usage patterns: This method can display substance usage trends over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot capture recent usage: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become identifiable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing is typically more expensive compared to other drug detection methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though frequently called "hair follicle tests", the procedure evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
