Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Brandon, Wisconsin. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing and operate centers in every city across the nation capable of performing hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is needed. Hair analysis can target drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test has become a more common method for drug screening. It is increasingly mandated by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts as a preferred alternative to traditional urine tests. These tests support employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial settings, and those on probation. A key advantage is its extended detection window, generally up to 90 days, with direct supervision during collection, making deception nearly impossible. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has gained acceptance as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a long-term history of substances, as biomarkers are ensnared in the strands' fibers as the hair grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, manipulation is challenging, and transportation is convenient.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for inspection and validation. For EtG, additional options, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. Checking the specimen's weight using a jeweler’s scale is advised. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory workflow for processing a drug test comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially integrating a sample into a lab's system. This stage involves checking that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, allocating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and filling any supplementary information not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary rapid drug abuse check. Screening is cost-efficient for broadly dismissing drug use, but a court-admissible positive result requires confirmation. Samples that presumptively test positive in Screening advanced to secondary confirmation.

When a Screening yields a presumptive positive, additional hair from the primary sample is prepared for Extraction. The stage of Extraction isolates drugs from the hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug tests are exceptionally challenging to execute.

Each positive Screening result is verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to validation as required. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation conforming to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can trace drug use over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug evaluation is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It reveals a historical drug use pattern over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Detectability in hair takes around 5-7 days for drugs.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the strand, not the follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
