Located in Brice Prairie, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Our specialized hair testing services are available nationwide, with testing centers in every city ready to conduct these tests. Generally, hair samples from the crown or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, are needed for the test. We can analyze these samples for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored hair testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests are becoming more popular in recent years. Employers, the judicial system, and Substance Abuse experts are more often favoring hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Used by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and individuals on probation, the extended detection period of hair tests—often up to 90 days—makes them hard to beat. Observed collection ensures integrity, and while urine tests are still most effective for recent use detection, the accuracy of hair tests is unparalleled.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is sourced near the scalp, it provides an approximate detection timeframe of up to three months for both alcohol and other drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A sample consisting of a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a similar weight of body hair may be taken. When referencing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four crucial steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where a sample is processed into a lab’s system. This step involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for abused drugs. Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug use in most samples, but a positive result must be verified for it to be court-admissible. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for preparation in Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing the most complex method to perform.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are used for Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes. All samples showing presumptive positive results are washed before Confirmation if needed. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated following CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocol and is accredited under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Attempting to cheat a hair drug test is extremely difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a record of drug use patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair in roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other testing approaches.
  • Result fluctuations: Factors including hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Brice Prairie, WI, hair follicle testing stands out for its superior accuracy compared to traditional urine tests. Hair tests have a much longer detection period, often capturing drug use not possible with urine tests. Employers and courts benefit from the reliability, as hair tests make it nearly impossible for individuals to alter or cheat, ensuring trustworthy results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
