In Bridge Creek, Wisconsin, full-service hair follicle drug testing is available through Accredited Drug Testing. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, our centers are located in every major city across the nation. Typically, hair must be between 1.5 and 2 inches long on the head or body. Analysis options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom testing solutions.

Recently, the popularity of hair follicle drug testing has surged. It is now a preferred method for employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse experts who often choose it over urine tests. Employers with strict policies utilize hair tests, known for their longer detection span—up to 90 days—through direct observation, minimizing chances of tampering. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, the urine test remains optimal.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair acts as a record of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers in the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When cut near the scalp, hair offers up to around a 3-month window for alcohol and other drug detection. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat tough to tamper with, and straightforward to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil size) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests over 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, the same quantity of body hair can be collected. Reference to head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages involved in lab-based drug test result processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This entails checking that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, quick inspection for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical means to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be legally admissible. Any samples that screen presumptively positive do need a secondary confirmation.

If a specimen screens presumptively positive, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is viewed as the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use over up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a narrower detection window.
  • Hard to deceive: It is exceedingly difficult to falsify a hair drug test, thus enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical insight: It can reveal a drug use pattern over an extended duration, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

For residents of Bridge Creek, WI, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over urine tests. Hair tests provide superior detection accuracy, outlasting the 90-day detection period unavailable in urine testing. This ensures that drug usage is more comprehensively documented, offering a clearer picture for employers and legal authorities when making critical decisions regarding employee conduct or legal actions.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection capability of hair follicle testing makes it a vital resource in Bridge Creek, WI. Unlike traditional methods, hair follicle tests can identify drug usage that stretches back up to 90 days. This feature allows employers to fully grasp the long-term substance habits of their workforce or applicants, creating a safer and more transparent working environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Bridge Creek, WI, hair follicle drug tests provide an effective defense against tampering. Unlike some other forms of drug testing, hair tests are notably tamper-resistant. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
