In Buchanan, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those requiring testing for drugs or alcohol, our specialization in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities available in cities across the nation. Typically, an individual needs 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on their head or body to conduct the test. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Over recent years, the hair follicle drug test has become a more prevalent method of testing for drugs. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse agencies are increasingly preferring hair tests to traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations following zero-tolerance drug policies, ensuring more prolonged detection, up to 90 days, through an observed collection, and minimizing the chance of test tampering. However, urine tests remain the most reliable for detecting recent usage within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has evolved into a robust method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair fibers retain a prolonged history of drug and alcohol presence by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe extending nearly up to three months for substances. The collection process for hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, an optimal quantity for both initial testing and subsequent verification. For EtG, certain additional tests, or panels exceeding ten, a collection of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement of the specimen is advisable. In instances where scalp hair is absent, a corresponding amount of body hair may be gathered. The term head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair, whereas body hair denotes any other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for analyzing a drug test result encompasses four pivotal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves incorporating a sample into the laboratory system initially. This procedure includes confirming proper sealing and shipment of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data input absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Though Screening offers an economical method to dismiss drug use in the majority of cases, a positive result warrants confirmation to hold up in court. Samples that appear positively during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation step.

If a sample is assumed positive during the Screening phase, additional strands are extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to alternative methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), thereby making hair drug analysis the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any affirmative Screening outcome is carried out utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples yielding presumptive positive results undergo a washing process prior to confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under the scrutiny of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests have the capability to identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to circumvent: Circumventing a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies chronological data: It furnishes a history of drug use over a duration, rather than solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to recognize recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than alternative testing methodologies.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
