Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Buena Vista, Wisconsin. As a specialist in hair-related drug and alcohol testing, we provide services in cities throughout the nation. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Hair tests offer options for drug, alcohol/ETG tests, or other personalized evaluations.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more frequent drug testing method. Increasingly, employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse experts prefer them over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored by employers with rigid anti-drug policies, the legal system, and those on probation, mainly because they detect drug use over a longer timeframe, up to 90 days, and are resistant to tampering. However, urine tests remain the most precise for drug use detection within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It provides a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can detect alcohol and drugs for a span of up to roughly 90 days. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample is recommended. If there is no scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair may be provided. When we talk about head hair, we mean scalp hair solely, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of generating a drug test result in the lab comprises four central stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial processing phase of recording a sample into the lab's system. This stage ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data input not catered to by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary quick assessment for drugs. Although Screening serves as an economical approach for ruling out drug presence in most samples, any positive result during Screening requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that appear positive during Screening must undergo a secondary verification.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this step, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of conducting hair drug screening.

Positive Screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, samples that are presumptive positives are cleansed as required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug tests are difficult to adulterate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Shows usage trends: Offers insight into the timeline of drug use, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Detection in hair takes around 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Variable outcomes: Drug metabolite levels in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Despite being frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
