Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Burnside, Wisconsin. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, our centers are available nationwide, ready to conduct these tests in any city. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head, but body hair may be used. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to other specifics.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly include hair follicle testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests benefit employers with zero-tolerance policies, the justice system, and probationary individuals. A key advantage is its extended detection window for drug use, reaching up to 90 days, and its imperviousness to tampering, unlike urine tests, which are better for detecting recent use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of substance use by storing biomarkers in the hair's growing fibers. When taken from near the scalp, a hair sample can offer a detection period of roughly up to 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect hair, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra tests, and/or analyses above 10 panels, it's advisable to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. 'Head hair' pertains specifically to scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Drug test result processing in the lab involves four major phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is processed into the lab’s system. This step includes checking that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug use for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally permissible. Any samples that test positive during Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods to conduct.

Positive results from Screening are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation when needed. The full lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as much as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeline.
  • Hard to manipulate: Altering a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring greater accuracy of results.
  • Records usage history: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing and urine testing in Burnside, WI, hair tests provide superior detection accuracy and reliability.

Unlike urine tests, which only detect recent drug use, hair follicle tests identify substance use with better precision and a longer history capture.

This comprehensive detection allows employers to gain a fuller understanding of an individual’s substance use history compared to shorter detection methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
