Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Butternut, Wisconsin. Whether you require a hair substance analysis or alcohol evaluation, our expertise in hair assessments and widespread locations Nationwide ensure professional tests. A sample between 1.5 to 2 inches from your head or body will often suffice. Results can determine presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

Recently, hair follicle analysis has gained traction as a preferred drug testing method. Many organizations, legal systems, and addiction specialists now opt for this type over traditional urine analyses. These tests are particularly favored by employers with strict drug-free mandates, legal entities, and those monitoring probation. The advantage? An extended detection span of up to 90 days, observed during sample collection, minimizing the risk of manipulation. Yet, for recent use (within five days), urine tests remain unparalleled in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. This technique monitors alcohol and drug history by preserving biomarkers in the hair fibers as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer about a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an optimal sample size for testing and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introduction of a sample into the lab’s system. This stage ensures the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigns a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN) randomly, and fills in any missing data not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs an initial speedy analysis for drugs of abuse. Screening economically eliminates drug presence in most samples, yet a positive result must be verified for legal acceptability. Samples flagged in Screening as potentially positive need further confirmation.

When a sample is flagged in the Screening process, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration versus other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of a positive result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all potentially positive samples are washed as necessary. The entire lab sequence, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair label and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with shorter detection intervals.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are challenging to falsify, ensuring highly reliable results.
  • Historical insights: Provides an overview of drug usage over time, not just recent patterns.

Limitations:

  • Ineffective for recent drug use: Drugs only become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences in hair color and growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
