In Calamus, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those needing drug or alcohol tests, we excel in hair analysis and have centers available nationwide for such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Our hair tests can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized needs.

Recently, there's been a notable shift towards using hair follicle tests over traditional urine tests for drug screening. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts favor hair testing. Organizations enforcing strict drug policies and courts employ these tests due to their extended detection ability—spanning up to 90 days—conducted under observation, minimizing the chance of tampering. Nonetheless, for drug usage within five days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the structure of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair offers up to a roughly 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to obtain, moderately challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece of roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels over 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. Head hair refers only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into the laboratory system. It incorporates verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not achieved through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary scan for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective means to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to qualify for legal proceedings. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If the sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair in much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most complex methodology to execute.

Positive screening outcomes are validated via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive specimens undergo a cleaning process prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Sustained detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a briefer detection span.
  • Hard to tamper with: Hair drug tests are notably challenging to falsify, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a timeline of drug use over months, instead of just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for detecting recent use: Detectability of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally more costly than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result inconsistencies: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
