Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Camp Lake, Wisconsin. If a hair test for drugs or alcohol is needed, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide in all cities to conduct the test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body can be used. Hair tests are effective for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair testing needs.

Lately, hair follicle tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over the traditional urine test. These tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The key advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, conducted through a monitored collection, and difficult to falsify. However, for detection of drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has garnered recognition as an effective means for discerning drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands offer an extended history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within their growing fibers. When hair is collected from the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol usage over a period nearing three months. Its simplicity of collection, resistance to tampering, and ease of shipping make hair a preferred sample.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width), harvested nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For testing involving EtG, additional substances, or panels exceeding ten, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, collecting an equal volume of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair imply only the scalp variety. 'Body hair' denotes all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for achieving a drug test result consists of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating a sample into a lab's system. This encompasses confirming proper sample sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary drug abuse test. While cost-effective, the Screening serves to generally exclude drug usage in most samples, yet positive outcomes necessitate confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples indicating presumptive positive results in Screening demand subsequent confirmation.

Presumptive positives during the Screening stage lead to further specimen extraction and preparation. Drugs are drawn from hair in this phase at significantly diminutive concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the challenge of hair drug screening execution.

Confirmation for any positive screen involves GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive specimens undergo washing prior to needed confirmation. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair tests can reveal drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: The accuracy of hair tests is bolstered by the difficulty in manipulating results.
  • Chronological consumption data: Provides insights into consumption patterns over time, rather than simply current usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: A 5-7 day period is required before drugs are traceable in hair.
  • Cost Implications: Generally more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result Variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite the common designation "hair follicle tests," analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
