Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing, Accredited Drug Testing serves Carson, Wisconsin. If hair or alcohol analysis is required, our expertise lies in hair assessments, available at testing sites in every U.S. city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair can be utilized. Hair tests are versatile, screening drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom hair test options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a standard procedure. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer these tests over conventional urine tests. Ideal for zero-tolerance policies, court orders, and probation conditions, these tests offer a detection window of up to 90 days, collected under observation, and are difficult to tamper with. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain precise.

What it is, How it works

The examination of hair has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying substance use related to drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged history of these substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair fibers as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to approximately three months for alcohol and other substances. The collection process for hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial introduction of a sample into a laboratory's system. This process involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid analysis for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally admissible. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require an additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), presenting a greater challenge in hair drug testing.

The Confirmation of any positive Screening result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before Confirmation as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a shorter detection period.
  • Resilience against tampering: The difficulty in cheating a hair test enhances result accuracy.
  • Provides usage trends: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair tests are typically costlier than other testing forms.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Carson, WI offers several advantages over urine testing. Reliability is one primary advantage of hair testing. It accurately identifies drug use over a prolonged period, typically up to 90 days, offering more comprehensive data compared to urine tests, which are limited to recent usage.
Accuracy is another benefit, as hair tests are less prone to false negatives, providing an authentic reflection of substance use history.

Compared to urine tests, hair follicle testing significantly reduces the window for test manipulation and evasion. In Carson, WI, individuals opting for hair testing enjoy more dependable outcomes, bolstering assurance in test results. With hair testing, recognizing substance use becomes clearer and more consistent, serving various needs efficiently from workplace requirements to personal accountability.

Extended Detection Window

In Carson, WI, hair follicle testing extends the detection window for drug use significantly. Unlike urine tests, which present a limited short-term view, hair tests reveal a substance history spanning up to 90 days. This extended detection period offers employers a far-reaching perspective on an individual's substance habits.
With hair testing, employers can assess candidates more thoroughly, identifying recurring patterns of drug usage rather than sporadic occurrences.

The comprehensive outlook provided by hair follicle tests in Carson, WI, majorly benefits employers during the recruitment process. It helps ensure potential employees maintain drug-free lifestyles, promoting workplace safety and productivity. By choosing hair testing, employers gain insight into long-term drug use, assisting in making informed hiring decisions and maintaining a secure working environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
