Specialists in hair follicle drug testing, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive testing services in Casey, Wisconsin. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with testing facilities available nationwide. Typically, about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body hair is used for testing. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other specialized options.

There has been a growing trend in using hair follicle drug tests in recent years. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Those with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation opt for these tests. With a detection span of up to 90 days, observed collection, and being almost impossible to tamper with, hair follicle tests are advantageous. For recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug use. By capturing biomarkers in the strands of hair as it grows, hair allows for an extensive retrospective view of substance use. When gathered near the scalp, it offers a detection period of up to three months. Hair is uncomplicated to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

Collecting a segment of hair 1.5 inches long, composed of around 200 strands (similar in width to a #2 pencil), yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal for analysis. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. Use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, the same quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we solely mean scalp hair, whereas body hair refers to all other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. It involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for substances of misuse. Although it is an economical method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be lawful in court. Presumptively positive samples during Screening must undergo a subsequent confirmation.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive result, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluids), rendering hair drug screening the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. From the Accessioning phase to Confirmation, the entire laboratory process is surveyed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use over up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a briefer timeframe.
  • Cheating difficulty: Due to the test's difficulty to cheat, the results are more dependable.
  • Historical data provision: The test can illustrate a drug use trend over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Outcome variations: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests," this test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
