Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Cazenovia, Wisconsin. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, offering testing facilities nationwide, including in every city, capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed for testing. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer customized options.

In recent times, conducting drug tests increasingly involves the hair follicle method. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests align with zero-tolerance policies followed by employers, courts, and probation individuals. The key advantage is a longer detection window of up to 90 days, with observed sample collection reducing the chance of cheating. For drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, it can reveal usage of alcohol and drugs over an approximate three-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and conveniently transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment containing about 200 hairs (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp delivers close to 100mg, the optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, additions, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is insufficient, a similar weight of body hair can be substituted. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails introducing the sample into the laboratory’s system initially. This step involves confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any remaining data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for potential drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to rule out drug use for most samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for legal validity. All presumed positive samples in Screening require additional confirmation.

When a sample is presumed positive in the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During Extraction, the concentration of drugs is extracted from hair at significantly lower levels than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening is the most demanding methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumed positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program and accredited per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that possess a shorter detection period.
  • Cheating difficulty: Tampering with a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Chronological usage data: It illustrates a usage pattern over an extended period rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Detection takes approximately 5-7 days post-use to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than other testing alternatives.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Notice: The test, often called "hair follicle tests", actually examines the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
