In Cedarburg, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug assessments. Our expertise in hair testing spans across the nation, offering facilities in every city capable of conducting these tests. Typically, the test requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Hair assessments evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored testing options.

Over the years, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity for drug examination processes. Many companies, judicial systems, and addiction experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. They are especially favored by employers enforcing strict drug-use policies, courts, and supervision programs. The standout advantage is an extended detection period, capturing up to three months of drug use, under supervised conditions, making it hard to manipulate. Urine tests, however, remain unmatched for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a vital means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records an extended history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands. When hair is obtained adjacent to the scalp, it might offer up to a 3-month window to detect alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and easy to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp results in 100mg of hair—ideal for screening and validating. For EtG, supplemental tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. The use of a jeweler's scale is recommended for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. References to head hair specifically imply scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test follows these primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts the sample's journey into the lab's system, ensuring proper sealing and shipping of the sample, the assignment of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial quick evaluation for substance abuse. Though Screening is a cost-beneficial method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for court acceptability. Presumptive positives from Screening mandate a secondary confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, further hair from the initial sample is obtained and readied for Extraction. Drugs are extracted at much lower concentrations from hair than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging method to execute.

The confirmation of positive screenings is done with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as required. The complete lab process, spanning Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect over a shorter period.
  • Low cheating probability: It's nearly impossible to cheat a hair drug test, increasing result reliability.
  • Provides temporal usage data: It offers a record of drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Detection in hair generally requires 5-7 days post-drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variation: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
