At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Charlestown, Wisconsin. Should you require testing for drugs or alcohol via hair samples, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we boast centers across all U.S. cities to handle such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are required. These tests help detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to specific needs.

In the last several years, the trend in drug testing has increasingly favored hair follicle tests. Employers, judiciary bodies, and those specializing in Substance Abuse often opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Such tests are indispensable for entities with strict drug-use policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The major advantage is an extended drug detection timeline of up to 90 days, collected under direct supervision, making deception nearly unfeasible. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. A hair strand encapsulates biomarkers within its fibers, offering an extensive history of substance use. Sampling hair near the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol usage within an approximately three-month detection period. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

An ideal sample comprises a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness) from the scalp, yielding 100mg. This is optimal for screening and verifying results. For EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. "Head hair" pertains solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step, involving the intake of a sample into the lab’s system. This process verifies correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data that an electronic chain of custody might not provide.

Screening provides a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal validity. Samples flagged as presumptive positives in Screening need additional confirmation.

For samples marked as presumptive positives in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, substances are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening particularly challenging to execute.

Confirmation for positive screening results is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are pre-washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 certification standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing identifies drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological data: This test provides a timeline of drug use, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair tests are generally pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the procedure analyzes the hair strand—not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
