Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Chaseburg, Wisconsin. Whether you need a drug or alcohol test utilizing hair, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in these tests, with facilities available across all cities nationwide equipped to conduct a hair examination. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is necessary on the crown or elsewhere on the body for most tests. Hair analysis can be conducted for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored solutions.

Recently, the preferred method for conducting drug tests increasingly includes hair follicle analysis. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now demand hair drug tests rather than the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probationers. Key advantages of hair tests are the extended drug use detection period, which spans up to 90 days, an observed collection ensuring accuracy, and the difficulty in tampering with results. Nevertheless, urine tests maintain precision for recent screening within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term history of alcohol and other substances by incorporating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to about three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, nearly impossible to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches composed of around 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be obtained. When mentioning head hair, it implies scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial quick assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use on most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be acceptable in legal settings. Any samples that are preliminarily positive during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result during the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The full process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair regulation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is exceptionally difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Shows usage pattern: It provides an overview of drug consumption over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
