Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Chicog, Wisconsin. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is needed, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in such evaluations, with facilities available in all major cities across the nation to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body might be required. These tests can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing choices.

Hair testing's prominence has grown over recent years in drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. These tests are essential for employers maintaining strict drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection time for drug use, up to 90 days, conducted under observation, and difficult to falsify. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a formidable method in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-standing record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When acquired near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and uncomplicated to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additions, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair is an alternative. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases involved in the laboratory processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This encompasses ensuring the sample was adequately sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples that indicate potential positive results during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample shows potential positive results in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating potential positive results are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficult to evade: It is exceptionally challenging to fool a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides usage pattern: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over an extended period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine testing in Chicog, WI, due to its superior detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests, which only provide a short-term view, hair tests offer a longer detection window, making them more effective at capturing a comprehensive picture of substance use.

Moreover, hair testing is much more reliable and less prone to manipulation compared to urine testing. This makes hair follicle tests an invaluable tool for employers seeking to implement strict drug-free policies, ensuring a safer workplace environment.

Extended Detection Window

In Chicog, WI, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window, allowing drug use to be tracked over a period of up to 90 days. This capability provides employers with a detailed perspective on an employee or applicant's history of substance use, far outperforming shorter-term tests like urine analyses.

This look into the past not only helps in identifying recurring patterns of abuse but also assists employers in making informed recruitment decisions. The extended detection capability is a game-changer for maintaining workplace safety and integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
