Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Cold Spring, Wisconsin. For those seeking a drug or alcohol evaluation via hair analysis, our expertise lies in specialized hair assessments, with facilities available across all cities nationwide. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is typically required. These evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained traction as a preferred drug screening method. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts often choose this over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, the judicial system, and probation services due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, observed sample collection, and resistance to tampering. Despite this, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair encapsulates a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the expanding hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 90-day detection period for alcohol and other drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a recommendation of 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails initially processing a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This step includes confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for detecting drug abuse. While it is an economical method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screening must be verified to be valid in court. Samples that yield a presumptive positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

When a sample tests positive at the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation, as required. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides usage pattern: It offers insights into a pattern of drug use over time, unlike tests that only detect recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing stands superior in Cold Spring, WI, due to its enhanced accuracy and reliability over traditional urine tests. Unlike urine analysis, which captures drug use within days, hair testing spans a multi-month period, revealing long-term patterns.

The reliability of hair testing ensures a broader detection spectrum, providing insights beyond recent drug consumption. This accuracy supports businesses enforcing zero-tolerance policies and complying with legal standards effectively.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Cold Spring, WI, offers a remarkable detection window extending up to 90 days. This prolonged period allows employers to gain a complete understanding of an individual’s drug use history, assisting in making informed decisions.

Compared to shorter detection periods of other drug tests, hair analysis provides a detailed analysis, revealing any repetitive substance abuse patterns. This extended look makes it indispensable for assessing long-term drug habits.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests in Cold Spring, WI, ensures the integrity of every result. Unlike urine tests, hair samples cannot be easily altered or diluted, safeguarding against any attempts to falsify results.

Through observed collection and resistant sample types, it becomes almost impossible to cheat the system. This reliability makes hair testing a trustworthy option for consistent, authentic drug assessment outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
