Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Colgate, Wisconsin. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, our centers nationwide are well-equipped to handle such requests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary for testing. We provide analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair testing requirements.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a more common procedure in recent years. Various employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug testing over urine testing. These tests are favored by employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and probationary entities. The main advantage of hair tests is their extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days. Although urine tests remain accurate for drug use within the past 5 days, hair tests are harder to deceive and conducted under direct supervision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers up to about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (akin to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair only, while body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages involved in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This step incorporates verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be permissible legally. Any sample preliminarily positive during Screening must undergo a secondary verification.

If a sample tests preliminarily positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are retrieved from the hair at a considerably lower concentration than in alternate approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Preliminarily positive samples undergo washing prior to verification as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Resistant to deception: It is exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thereby ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a drug usage pattern over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
