Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Conrath, Wisconsin. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing is backed by our network of testing centers available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or another part of your body is required. These tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or providing other tailored testing solutions.

In the recent past, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for executing drug tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair testing over standard urine tests. Hair follicle testing is endorsed by employers with stringent anti-drug policies, courts, and probation officers. A notable advantage of the hair follicle test is its extended detection window for drug usage, reaching up to 90 days, conducted under observed conditions, and is virtually tamper-proof. Nevertheless, for recent drug use spanning the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair drug testing has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying the presence of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by incorporating biomarkers into the fibers of the growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for approximately a 90-day period. Hair collection is straightforward, offers resistance to tampering, and is easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches in length, consisting of about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both initial screening and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional procedures, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a sample weight of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for accurate measurement. In situations where scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result includes four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step confirms proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry that may not be included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial, rapid assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is a cost-efficient strategy to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be verified to be acceptable in legal proceedings. Samples that test positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Upon a positive result at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are retrieved from hair in lesser concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening poses the greatest challenge in terms of methodology.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is performed through techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples showing presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation when required. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a longitudinal profile of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Results variability: Factors, such as hair color and individual hair growth rates, can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the testing process analyzes the hair shaft itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Conrath, WI, hair follicle testing outshines urine testing due to its superior detection accuracy. Hair tests capture more extended drug usage windows and are less susceptible to manipulation, unlike urine tests, offering a more reliable drug screening approach. This accuracy empowers employers and institutions with a dependable means of maintaining a drug-free environment.

Extended Detection Window

Hair testing in Conrath, WI, offers an extended detection window—identifying drug use for up to 90 days. This duration grants employers a comprehensive history of an individual's substance involvement. Compared to other methods, hair testing provides a thorough overview, enhancing decision-making in employment contexts.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
