Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Cross Plains, Wisconsin. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we're experts in hair testing, with centers across all major cities nationwide equipped to conduct such tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your scalp or body is typically needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become more commonly used for drug screenings. Employers, judicial courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probation officers favor hair testing due to its extended drug detection period—up to 90 days—combining a monitored collection process with difficulty in manipulating results. For drug usage within the last five days, however, urine tests still remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has garnered recognition as an influential method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug history by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered in proximity to the scalp, hair can yield a detection span of up to about three months for alcohol and other substances. It is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A segment of 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, an optimal sample for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable volume of body hair may be utilized. When discussing head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair alone. Body hair includes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome comprises four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's system. This step encompasses ensuring the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, providing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a budget-friendly means to exclude drug use in the majority of cases, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be permissible in court. Samples yielding presumptive positives in Screening require an additional confirmation step.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and primed for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underlying the complexity of hair drug screening compared to other methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash prior to confirmation when necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It is quite challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides chronological data: It offers an insight into drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test itself evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
