Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Curtiss, Wisconsin. If a hair-based drug or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities across all cities Nationwide to conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body can be used. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

Over recent years, drug testing methods commonly include a hair follicle drug test. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are mandatory for employers with strict no-drug policies, as well as courts, and individuals on probation. Its chief advantage is a far longer detection window for drug use, usually up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, making it almost impossible to falsify. Nevertheless, to detect recent drug use within the last five days, the urine test persists as the most accurate method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a robust method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of drug and alcohol history by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When harvested close to the head, hair can offer up to nearly a 3-month detection range for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to obtain, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample length of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional checks, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If no scalp hair is present, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used instead. In reference to head hair, this pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair denotes any other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key phases within the lab handling of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This step entails checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data recordings not covered by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening encompasses a preliminary swift inspection for substances of misuse. While Screening is an economical method for eliminating drug usage in the bulk of samples, a positive screen needs confirmation to be legitimate in legal settings. Any samples that test positive presumptively during Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

If a sample is clearly positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative procedures (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging procedure to carry out.

To validate any positive screening outcome, tests are conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All positive presumptive samples are cleaned before confirmation as required. The full lab procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation is evaluated in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests are capable of detecting substance use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which possess a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is highly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Supplies historical data: It can outline a pattern of substance use over an extended period, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the testing process examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
