Schedule your Hair Drug Test

Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

In Danbury, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive services for hair follicle drug testing. Whether you're looking for a test for drugs or alcohol, our centers across the country specialize in hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from your head or body for testing. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to test other substances.

Hair follicle testing has become more common in recent years for drug testing. Many employers, court systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over urine tests. Hair tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, court orders, and probation requirements. They offer a major advantage with a detection period up to 90 days, are conducted under direct observation, and are difficult to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use within 5 days.

* You must register by phone or online to receive your donor pass/registration prior to proceeding to the testing center. You must bring a valid government issued ID along with the registration/barcode number which was sent to you by email.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by locking in biomarkers within the growing hair's fibers. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximately 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is easy, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, with roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is recommended. It is advisable to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab’s system by ensuring it was properly sealed and shipped, randomly assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening includes a preliminary quick assessment for drugs of abuse. While it's an economical way to potentially identify drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in legal settings. Samples that are presumably positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging approach.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing if necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely tough, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Provides historical data: It can illustrate a drug usage pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: There's a delay of approximately 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.
