For comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Dayton, Wisconsin, turn to Accredited Drug Testing. Whether the need is for a hair drug or alcohol test, their expertise in hair testing is unmatched. With testing centers available across all cities nationwide, obtaining a hair test is straightforward. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body suffices. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Over recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly prioritized hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often opt for these over standard urine tests. Especially favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies and courts for probationers, hair follicle tests offer the advantage of detecting drug use for up to 90 days with observed collection, making them nearly impossible to manipulate. However, for identifying drug use in the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying substance use, including drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the hairs as they grow. When clipped close to the scalp, hair can reflect up to a roughly 3-month period of substance use detection. Hair is straightforward to obtain, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprised of approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for both screening and verification. For tests involving EtG, additional substances, and/or those surpassing 10 panels, a collection of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to use a scale intended for measuring jewelry to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. By "head hair," we specifically refer to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory methodology for analyzing a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory's system. This includes ensuring the sample's correct sealing and shipping, assigning it a distinct LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any supplementary data absent from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening provides an initial, swift assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result must undergo confirmation to be valid in a legal setting. Any samples showing a presumptive positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is separated from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. At this point, substances are extracted from hair at much smaller concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The laboratory procedures from Accessioning to Confirmation are scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug utilization for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a more restricted detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical data: It offers insights into a pattern of substance use over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to be discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing options.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Despite commonly being termed "hair follicle tests", these tests evaluate the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Dayton, WI, hair follicle testing offers significant advantages over traditional urine tests. One primary benefit is its extended detection period, allowing for drug use history examination over a longer timeframe. This capability proves invaluable for organizations enforcing zero-tolerance substance policies.

Furthermore, hair follicle testing’s superior detection accuracy and reliability make it the preferred choice over urine tests. With a more extended detection window and observed collection, it presents a robust solution to the challenges faced by urine-based methods, providing greater compliance assurance.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing offers an expanded detection window, distinguishing it from other drug testing methods. In Dayton, WI, employers gain a comprehensive insight into an individual's substance use history, reaching back up to 90 days. This long-term view aids in making well-informed hiring or workplace decisions.

The ability to screen drug use over a few months rather than days ensures that organizations maintain higher standards of safety and compliance. Applicants and employees undergo a thorough review, minimizing the risk of overlooked substance use and enhancing workplace integrity.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Dayton, WI, hair follicle testing is renowned for its tamper-resistant nature. Unlike urine tests, which can be prone to tampering, hair follicle tests offer a significant reduction in sample adulteration risks. This feature guarantees reliable and unquestionable results for drug use detection.

The stringent test administration process makes it nearly impossible to manipulate results, providing a trustworthy method for substance use screening. This reliability empowers employers and legal entities, ensuring decisions are based on accurate, unaltered data.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
