Located in De Soto, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair testing, they offer centers across all cities Nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests can be tailored for drug, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Organizations, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts are increasingly opting for hair tests over urine tests. Hair tests cater to employers with zero-tolerance policies, tribunals, and those on probation. The advantage lies in its extended detection window, typically up to 90 days. This closely observed procedure is nearly foolproof, although urine tests remain most accurate for recent substance use, within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are now perceived as an effective method for the identification of drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and other drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection time frame for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to fake, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for assessment and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing requirements, and/or for tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to use a jeweler's scale for weighing. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. When head hair is mentioned, it refers strictly to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This stage confirms the sample's proper sealing and shipping, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and accomplishes any supplemental data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid inspection for substance abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, a screen indicating positive requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Any samples presumed positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. During this step, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. The whole laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a reduced detection window.
  • Resistance to tampering: Tampering with a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Yields historical insight: It can depict a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternate drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
