For all-inclusive hair follicle drug testing in Dell Prairie, Wisconsin, turn to Accredited Drug Testing. Specializing in hair evaluations for drugs and alcohol, our centers are scattered across all major cities nationwide, ready to conduct your test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, whether from the crown of the head or the body. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, alongside bespoke testing options.

Over the past years, hair follicle drug assessments have surged in popularity for examining substance use. This method, opted for by employers, court systems, and substance abuse professionals, is gaining favor for its longer detection timeline. With employers enforcing stringent no-drug policies, hair tests extend the drug detection period up to 90 days, offering almost cheat-proof reliability. Yet, urine testing remains superior for identifying drug use within the initial 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives extended histories of alcohol and drug intake by incorporating biomarkers into the fibers of a growing strand. When taken near the scalp, hair may offer a detection timeframe of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for both analytics and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This step entails ensuring that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening involves a preliminary swift assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to eliminate drug use in the bulk of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening do require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample exhibits a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

To verify any positive screening result, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies are employed. All samples that show presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, contrary to urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a trend of drug use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent intake: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing procedures.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
