Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Dexter, Wisconsin. Our expertise in hair and alcohol testing is unrivaled, with centers across the nation ready to carry out these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Our hair tests can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

Recently, the preference for drug testing has shifted towards hair follicle tests. This approach is favored by employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Those enforcing zero-tolerance policies, including courts and probation officers, rely on hair testing for its extended detection period of up to 90 days and its resistance to manipulation, though urine tests are still superior for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Seen as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol presence, hair testing offers a comprehensive timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When hair is cut near the scalp, it gives a detection span of up to three months for alcohol and drug traces. Hair is straightforward to gather, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment composed of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advise weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a commensurate portion of body hair can be taken. When indicating head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

In laboratory processing of drug test outcomes, four primary steps are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introductory processing of a sample into the lab's framework, encompassing the confirmation of the sample's seal and proper shipping, the allocation of a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and the completion of any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be court-eligible. All samples that are provisionally positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the gathered specimen and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn out from hair at considerably reduced concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most intricate technique to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. As necessary, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a pattern of drug utilization over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing strategies.
  • Result variations: Changes in hair color and individual hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
