In Dexterville, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. Our expertise in hair testing is supported by testing centers located in every major city across the nation. Hair on the crown of your head should ideally be 1.5 to 2 inches long or body hair can be used if necessary. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing solutions.

In recent years, the hair follicle drug test has become a staple method for detecting substance use. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts favor this over the conventional urine test. Its extensive 90-day detection window and the difficulty in tampering make hair testing a choice for those with zero-tolerance policies. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine testing remains a reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a crucial method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample of 1.5 inches, containing about 200 hair strands (comparable in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield around 100mg of hair, which is ideal for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding ten, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of dealing with a drug test result in the laboratory involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is first processed into the lab’s system. This step includes checking if the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data that the electronic chain of custody didn't include.

Screening is a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective way to exclude drug use in most cases, any positive findings require Confirmation to be valid for court proceedings. Samples that test presumptive positive in Screening require a further confirmation step.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptively positive are cleansed prior to confirmation if needed. The entire process from Accessioning through Confirmation is overseen under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very unlikely, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Traceable usage pattern: It reveals a timeline of substance use over time, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage undetectable: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair coloration and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," these tests actually evaluate the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
