Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Diamond Bluff, Wisconsin. When in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in this field, with facilities in every city across the nation capable of conducting hair evaluations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the head or body for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, use of alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific analyses.

Recently, hair follicle drug assessments have become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists opt for hair evaluations over traditional urine exams. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers enforcing strict anti-drug policies, judicial authorities, and those supervising probation. The key advantage is the extended detection period, usually up to 90 days, obtained through witnessed sample collection, making it hard to tamper with. Conversely, urine tests remain the best option for identifying recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair fiber as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, a hair sample can signal a detection timeline of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) near to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the perfect amount for a thorough screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or beyond 10 panel testing, 150mg of hair is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable volume of body hair is suggested. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. All other hair types, such as facial or axillary, are categorized as body hair.

Process Overview

The primary four phases in lab processing for a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample’s initial processing into the laboratory’s system. This step includes confirming proper sample sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for illicit substances. Though Screening offers a budget-friendly approach to negating drug presence in most samples, court-admissibility demands confirmatory testing of a positive screen. Samples showing presumptive positives during Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptive positives in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than in other methodologies (for example, urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging process.

Positive screening confirmations are carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire progression from Accessioning through to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation complying with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests uncover drug presence for as long as 90 days, contrary to urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Challenge to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, increasing result reliability.
  • Historical data provision: Hair drug testing can display a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and varied individual hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although colloquially termed "hair follicle tests", the evaluation actually assesses the hair strand itself rather than the follicle located below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
