Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Ellington, Wisconsin. If you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities serving cities across the nation. Typically, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown, or alternative hair from the body may be used. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have grown in popularity for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists often prefer them over traditional urine tests. Useful for zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial procedures, and probation monitoring, hair tests are favored for their long detection window, often up to 90 days, secured through an observed collection method, and tough to falsify. However, urine tests lead in detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a lasting record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection timeframe of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. It’s straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil in size) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is perfect for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional panels, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is preferable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is advised. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair relates to other hair types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab's system. This process ensures the sample was securely packaged and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any other necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

During Screening, an initial assessment for drugs of abuse occurs. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally viable. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptively positive result in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to hair drug testing being the most challenging method to execute.

Positive screening confirmation is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation if needed. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is very difficult, resulting in higher accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite commonly being called "hair follicle tests", these tests evaluate the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
