Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Erin Prairie, Wisconsin. Whether you need a drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing, with centers in cities nationwide. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body, these tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in recent years. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation programs use them for their extended detection period, which can reach up to 90 days. Despite urine tests being more accurate within a 5-day window, hair tests are hard to cheat due to their observed process.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a historical record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the fiber of the growing strands. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer almost a 3-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch piece comprising around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, extra analyses, or tests beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other hair types (face, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in laboratory analysis for drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of the sample into a lab’s system. This step confirms that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening involves an initial fast assessment for substance abuse. Though Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation for legal proceedings. Samples with a presumptive positive result during Screening will require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positives during Screening, further hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging process to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as necessary. The laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, which is longer than the window for urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test proves very challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become evident in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug testing usually costs more compared to alternative drug testing strategies.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
