Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Exeland, Wisconsin. If you need drug or alcohol hair testing, our expertise in this area is unmatched, with testing centers available in every city Nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a standard method for detecting substance use. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing strict no-drug-use policies, the judicial system, and probation services frequently utilize these tests. Their key advantage lies in a longer detection window, usually up to 90 days, secured through supervised collection and near impossible to falsify. Still, for use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a potent method for identifying substance use, such as drugs and alcohol. By capturing biomarkers, hair offers a prolonged history of substance consumption within the strands. When sourced near the head, hair can reveal a usage timeline of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A snippet of 1.5 inches, equating to approximately 200 hairs (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) next to the scalp, yields about 100mg—the optimal amount for analysis. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advised. Use a jeweler's scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be acquired. When discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory procedure involves four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is entered into the lab's system, ensuring it was properly packaged and sent, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional required manual data input.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drug traces. Though it is an economical method to exclude the presence of drugs in many samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal credibility. Samples indicating potential positivity in Screening need further confirmation.

If the Screening stage reveals potential positivity, additional hair from the initial sample undergoes preparation for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from the hair at a much lower concentration relative to other testing forms (such as urine or saliva), underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing.

Positive results from Screening are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples testing presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for up to three months, unlike urine tests which detect recent use.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating is highly improbable, ensuring test accuracy.
  • Tracks usage history: It offers a timeline of drug use, not limited to recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Recent consumption detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing is typically pricier than alternative methods.
  • Inconsistent results: Elements such as hair pigment and growth rate variances can influence metabolite concentration.

Note: Terms like "hair follicle tests" can be misleading, as the actual analysis is performed on the hair strands, not the follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
