Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Fairview, Wisconsin. For those in need of hair-based drug or alcohol testing, we specialize in hair assessments with locations available across the nation, capable of conducting the tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific analyses.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become more common for substance detection. Many employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists now prefer it over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle analyses are often chosen by workplaces with strict anti-drug policies, legal courts, and probation officers. A key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection limit, which covers up to 90 days, involving a monitored collection process that's nearly tamper-proof. Nonetheless, urinalysis remains the preferred method for identifying usage within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair’s growing strands. When sourced near the scalp, it offers approximately a three-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section, containing about 200 hair strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, an ideal amount for evaluation and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels beyond 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, the same amount of body hair can be taken. When discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the primary handling of a sample within a lab’s system. It entails ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not provided by an electronic custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid check for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples that are provisionally positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is presumed positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this step, drugs are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a notably challenging method.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleaned prior to confirmation as required. The end-to-end lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very tough, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can alter drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
