In Forest, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services. If hair drug or alcohol screening is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing offers expertise in hair testing, with centers across the nation equipped to conduct these tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is typically required. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized as needed.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for drug screening. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine methods. This testing method is favored by employers with strict no-drug use policies, legal courts, and probationary individuals. The main advantage of hair tests is their ability to detect drug use over an extended timeframe of up to 90 days, with results gathered through a closely supervised process. Urine tests remain superior for detecting very recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust means for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a long-term record of drugs and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand. Collecting hair near the scalp offers a detection period reaching up to about 90 days for both alcohol and drugs. Hair specimen collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) cut closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to gather 150mg of the sample. Measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale is suggested. In cases where scalp hair is missing, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. References to head hair mean scalp hair solely. Body hair encompasses other kinds, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step of entering a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any additional data input not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary inspection for drug abuse. Although it’s a cost-efficient way to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples with preliminary positive results in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample exhibit presumptive positivity during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS are employed for confirming any positive Screening results. All samples with presumptive positive outcomes are washed before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can capture drug usage up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests having a shorter timeframe for detection.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are notably hard to tamper with, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: They offer a record of drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically incur higher expenses than alternative drug testing methodologies.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
