Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Fountain, Wisconsin. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we specialize in hair testing with centers across the nation, including every city, to conduct these tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body for testing. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to your testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Businesses with no-drug tolerance policies, legal entities, and probation officers employ this test due to its extended detection window, which reveals drug usage for up to 90 days. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting very recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The detection of drug and alcohol use has seen significant advancement with hair testing. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair strand that grows. When the sample is taken close to the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. The collection process is straightforward, the likelihood of adulteration is minimal, and it is easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands, similar in size to a #2 pencil, taken nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it's advisable to use 150mg of the specimen. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, where a sample is introduced into a laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, tagging it with a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody program.

Screening carries out an initial broad check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to identify drug usage across most samples, any positive results must be verified to hold up in court. Samples that show a positive result in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

For samples that yield a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are drawn from hair at notably lower concentrations than in alternate methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is vetted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and holds accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drugs used up to 90 days earlier, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection duration.
  • Cheating resistance: It's quite challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, thus the findings are more reliable.
  • Yields historical insight: It reflects a history of drug usage over a timeframe, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Recent use limitation: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and does not involve the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
