Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Friesland, Wisconsin. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing is available nationwide with centers in every city ready to perform a hair assessment. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

Of late, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probation services. The chief advantage is the extended detection span of up to 90 days, coupled with an observed sample collection ensuring accuracy and tamper resistance. However, urine tests still hold an edge for recent 5-day drug consumption checks.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for detecting the presence of drugs and alcohol. Hair strands incorporate biomarkers within their fibers, allowing for a retrospective look at substance use. When taken from near the scalp, hair samples can reveal substance consumption for up to a three-month duration. This method is straightforward to collect, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches in length, containing about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil), will produce 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both initial screening and verification. For EtG tests, additional assessments, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is recommended. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is advisable. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent measure of body hair can be collected. References to head hair specifically pertain to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key components of processing a drug test in a laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating a sample into the laboratory system, which includes ensuring it was properly sealed and transported, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening acts as a preliminary check for drug presence. Though it offers a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use for most samples, positive results from this phase need further verification for legal acceptance. Presumptive positives require secondary validation.

Assuming a presumptive positive occurs during Screening, additional hair is prepared for Extraction. The drugs are extracted from the hair at concentrations significantly lower than in other tests (e.g., urine, oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most complex methodologies.

Positives confirmed from Screening are verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to falsification: The challenge in manipulating hair tests leads to more precise results.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It highlights drug consumption over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair within approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Supercedes Urine Testing in Friesland, WI
The efficacy of hair follicle testing over traditional urine analysis is evident in various aspects. Hair tests offer superior detection accuracy and reliability, especially in cases where substance use occurred extended back in time. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
