Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Gibson, Wisconsin. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol assessments, our specialty in hair testing is complemented by testing centers situated in cities across the country, ready to conduct these evaluations. Hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the scalp, or body hair in many cases, is necessary. These tests can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or additional specific needs.

Increasingly, drug testing approaches have incorporated hair follicle methods. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals are choosing hair tests over traditional urine assessments. Hair follicle tests are advantageous for workplaces with zero-tolerance substance policies, legal proceedings, and probation cases, primarily due to their extended drug detection timeframe, often up to 90 days, and almost foolproof collection process. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the best choice for identifying recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol presence for up to about three months. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch hair sample roughly equivalent to 200 strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result features four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's system. This stage ensures the sample's seal and shipment accuracy, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not supplied by an electronic chain-of-custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective approach to ruling out drug usage across most samples, a positive result must be validated to hold up in court. Any samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a presumptive positive arises during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair in significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

The Confirmation of any positive screening result utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptively positive samples undergo a washing process prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, contrasting with urine tests, which feature a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, thus the results are more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: It can demonstrate a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth inconsistencies can influence the drug metabolites' concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Gibson, WI, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. The superior detection accuracy of hair tests can identify substance use patterns over a longer period, offering a comprehensive view of an individual's habits. Reliable and almost foolproof, hair testing is favored by employers and authorities seeking accurate results. The method reduces false negatives, marking a step forward from conventional urine tests when it comes to precision.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Gibson, WI, is instrumental in detecting drug use over an extended period, providing coverage up to 90 days. This detailed detection window allows employers a thorough understanding of a subject's potentially long-standing substance use history. For companies, this means capturing a broader timeline of drug usage behavior, thereby offering a more comprehensive evaluation of an individual’s compliance and reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
