In Gilmanton, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair tests—be it for drugs or alcohol—our centers across all cities nationwide facilitate these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the scalp or body. Hair testing accommodates analyses for substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle testing. This test is becoming the norm for employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, replacing traditional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, as well as courts and probation services, leverage these tests for their extended detection range, covering up to 90 days, and supervised collection, making them difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is recognized as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol intake. Hair can capture a comprehensive record of substance use due to the preservation of biomarkers within the strands as hair grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of nearly three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, an optimal quantity for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to evaluate the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair might be obtained. By head hair, we imply scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This process includes confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding additional data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. While cost-efficient, a positive screen must be corroborated to be court-valid. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluids), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initial positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can track drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a briefer detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Provides historical data: Offers a usage pattern over time, not strictly recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Differences such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests" being commonly used, the actual test focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
