Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Green Lake, Wisconsin. If you require testing for hair-related drug or alcohol, we specialize in hair assessments with testing centers in all cities Nationwide that can facilitate a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body can be used for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In the past few years, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals all employ these tests. A significant advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their much longer detection period of up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection process that makes them almost cheat-proof. For drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective means of detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extended timeline of drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When hair is sourced near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg of the sample is made. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When we refer to head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair is inclusive of all other hair types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug test result process in a lab encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. Though Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. At this juncture, drugs are extracted from the hair at notably lower concentrations than in alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluids), which renders hair drug testing as the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that initially test positive undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to deception: A hair drug test is arduous to deceive, lending more accuracy to the results.
  • Reveals historical usage: It can show a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the examination pertains to the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
