Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle testing services in Green Valley, Wisconsin. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert in hair testing, with facilities in every city Nationwide equipped to conduct hair tests. Hair length should be between 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or elsewhere on the body for the test. Hair testing can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options.

Over recent years, the preference for drug testing methods has shifted towards hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over the standard urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal courts, and those on probation often use hair follicle tests. The main advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their extended drug detection window, which can last up to 90 days, collected under observation, making tampering nearly impossible. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Seen as a robust method, hair testing is utilized for detecting drug and alcohol use. The hair encapsulates a lengthy history of such substances by holding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When hair is collected adjacent to the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to dispatch.

A sampling of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and verification. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's recommended to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In situations where scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair is collectable. References to head hair are limited to scalp hair, and body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is comprised of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing phase where a sample enters a lab’s system. It confirms that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary scan for drugs of abuse. While Screening cost-effectively excludes drug use in most samples, a positive result demands confirmation for court acceptance. Presumptively positive Screening samples need secondary confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for the Extraction phase. At this point, the concentration of drugs extracted from hair is significantly lower than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a particularly challenging methodology to perform.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS conduct the Confirmation of any positive Screening result. All presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. Each step from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can uncover drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a narrower detection window.
  • Tough to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, leading to more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical use data: A pattern of drug use over time, rather than only recent use, can be revealed.

Limitations:

  • No detection for recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", hair tests actually examine the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Green Valley, WI. Hair follicle tests provide a superior detection period, spanning up to 90 days, in contrast to the much shorter timeframe urine tests offer. This expanded window allows a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance use history, giving employers the insight needed for informed decision-making and policy enforcement.

In addition to an extended detection time, hair tests decrease opportunities for adulteration, offering a more secure testing method compared to urine tests. The accuracy and reliability of hair follicle testing make it a valuable asset for various stakeholders seeking trustworthy drug use evaluations in Green Valley, Wisconsin.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
